Self portrait is when a portrait an artist has produced of themselves.
Selfie:
A photo a person has taken of themselves, technically with a smartphone or webcam and shared on social media.
I take around 1-5 selfies a week but not separately but by taking more than one to ensure my photo isn't blurry. I also take photos from WhatsApp to my friends and sometimes on snapchat and Instagram but delete them after a couple of days. The reason I believe why taking selfies has become so popular is to show off about your life like everyone else but also to make great memories with friends and family or even with yourself to look back on as time passes. I believe there are bad sides of taking selfies because many people who edit them and change ones appearance can make another feel very self conscious. Another reason for it to be dangerous is being opened to hate comments and cyber-bullying.
This is my favourite self portrait because of the detail the artist put into the painting and the shading.
Mark Gertler ('Self Portrait with a Fishing Cap')
Oil on canvas,circa 1908-1909
Entry by Gonzales Patrick from France
This is my favourite selfie because of the editing of it and. how the girl is see-through and the background is nice and the composition fits well with the image.
In todays lesson I walked around the school taking reflection selfies. I found this task a bit hard because the only source of reflection I could find were mirror selfies and I couldn't over do it with just mirror photos so I had to try walking around school to find any source of reflection other than mirrors.
This image is my favourite because the effect of the image looks photoshopped which isn't.
Ralph Eugene Meatyard (Self portrait with Camera and Guitar) 1955
This image resembles my image because the man is see-through like and the colouring is both black and white.
Selfie Project:
How I created my images was by using an app called Pixlr which allowed me to edit and change fonts of images. I made my book by using A4 coloured papers and stuck them together. For the composition of my images I used diptych and also put solo image.
I was inspired by this self-Portrait by Suckart. I liked this idea because I liked the type of font it gave and style. I used Pixlr t achieve this goal, and I personally liked the outcome.
Shadow selfies
Today in class we went around block one taking photos of any image inside our view finder we got given. I found this image interesting but because my camera's setting couldn't take any high quality image while out it became very bright.
My favourite image:
This is my favourite image because I like the composition of the painting in my view finder. What I dislike about my image is how close the view finder is making it block the surroundings.
Next time I will make sure to consider my surroundings more and show the foreground as well as the main focus.
Assessment:
In Lee Friedlander's photograph it's in black and white. It has a figure standing outside a window with a car and a man outside of it. Francesca Woodman's photo is also in black and white with a mirror or doorway, and in it has two strange objects and a persons hand in front of one. Kenneth Josephson's photograph is in black and white with a car and a hand pointing out at the car, with an image of someones hand resting out of the car window.
In Lee Friedlander's image he used the technique timing by the cars passing by and also uses frame by the window. Francesca Woodman uses framing by the doorway/mirror. Kenneth's image uses timing because of the driver behind in the background and he also uses framing and edges with the sharp points of the cut out square. All images show shadows and sharp edges.
What I find mysterious about Lee Friendlander's is how you can't see the figure taking the photo. The photographer has an interesting composition. For Francesc's work I find myserteous because of how you cannot tell if its a mirror or a doorway. The Kenneth Josephson image uses timing because of the driver. All images show shadows and sharp edges.
What I find mysterious about Lee Friedlander is how you can't see the figure taking the photo. The photographer has an interesting composition. For Francesca's work I find it mysterious because of how you cannot tell if it's a mirror or doorway, and it's also very creepy because of how the room is abandoned like and would seem cold and lonely. For Kenneth's photograph it's unexpected because of how he has a printed out image of a hand or he cut a square in the paper and in it; and he put it over his hand to give the illusion it had been printed out. The piece of paper also covers the person's face meaning we don't know what the person looks like.
The photograph I like the most is by Francesca Woodman from Angel series, Roma, September 1977' because of how paranormal the photograph looks like. I like how the doorway or mirror looks like that you can't tell what it is. The objects used are weird and unique looking. Even though the room is empty its very interesting because you question a lot about the image. It could influence my work by making it more mysterious. You can also tell the photographer has put in a lot f work into this photograph, by the layout to the lighting.
Scan photography
Today we tried out scan photography. I found this task interesting because it was hard to be in the right position. I don't like my photo as much because I look terrible. I only like the way my hair trunt out in the photograph. To achieve this we used paper to put our faces on for the scanner. We could test out different techniques for this.
Similarities:
Both are selfies
Both are taken by a reflection
The composition of the girls are the same
Both have people
Both are females
Differences:
Colour
Location
Pose
Clothes
Camera
What formal and visual elements (composition, line, space and shape, light ,foreground, background) are evident in both images?:
The compositing in both photographs have the two woman in the middle of their photograph. For Vivian Mair her image uses lines that outline the buildings behind her. In Amalia Ulman's photo there are lines outlining the objects in the background behind her. Amalia's photo looks more bright due to her image having colour and she may have turned a light on. For Vivian's photo it looks darker because it's in black & white. Amalia's background has be bedroom being shown while Vivian's photograph has buildings and people behind her.
